Former Washington player Ryan Kerrigan. Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington’s all-time sack leader Ryan Kerrigan announced his retirement last month. Immediately, he expressed his desire to stick around football by transitioning into coaching . Thus, Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera gave him an opportunity to get his feet wet, allowing former edge rusher help out with their talented defensive line.

On Saturday, Kerrigan was doing his duties getting the group ready for their preseason opener. That’s when Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney gave Kerrigan a welcome into coaching in hilarious fashion during warmups.

Kerrigan wasn’t expecting that. Both Toney and Kerrigan laughed it off. Even Chase Young joined in the laughs as did other witnesses on the field.

Kerrigan played his first 10 years with the Washington franchise. He may not have been knocked to the ground the way Toney flattened him during his whole time as a player in burgundy and gold.

He may learn quickly the joys of coaching aren’t as pleasant as one thinks.
