The Indianapolis Colts stayed fairly quiet during last week's first wave of NFL free agency.
But now we head into wave two, an area where the Chris Ballard-led Colts typically thrive.
So, I will be sharing the best players still available at positions I believe the Colts are still in need of a move ahead of the 2024 season.
This article will focus on the best available free agents that fit the Colts' need at Strong Safety.
Best SS free agent options:
John Johnson, Los Angeles Rams
John Johnson is an intriguing option because he's spent time as both an SS and an FS in his career. And with the Colts safety room needing a starter at both positions at the moment, he could make a lot of sense. The 28-year-old safety is coming off his 2nd stint with the Rams after spending two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Signing Johnson would allow the Colts flexibility to find the best overall safety to pair with him. Personally, though, I think his instincts and versatility would be best used at SS in Julian Blackmon's role last season.
Julian Blackmon, Indianapolis Colts
The Colts made a point to resign their notable in-house free agents this offseason, all but one that is. As their starting strong safety from last season, Julian Blackmon remains a free agent. Blackmon had a career year last season in his first year as an SS, but like Johnson, he has the ability to play both. He is also only 25 years old, so I think the Colts would be making a huge mistake by letting him walk this offseason. And with him set to visit the Buffalo Bills that could very well be where things are heading.
Jamal Adams, Seattle Seahawks
Jamal Adams was once considered one of the best safeties in the NFL. He's had quite the fall from grace in recent years, and his stint with the Seahawks would probably be called a failure after the franchise traded away two first-round picks and more for the star safety. Many have scrutinized his play since, and while his play did not match up with his large contract over that time, I think at 28 years old, he can still be an impactful SS and has the athletic traits that the Colts usually covet. So this could make sense as Adams looks to rebound from his time in Seattle.
