WFT quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick suffers hip injury in season opener against Chargers

Ryan Fitzpatrick's Washington Football Team debut ended quickly.

The veteran quarterback exited Sunday's game against Los Angeles in the second quarter after he was hit by Chargers edge-rusher Uchenna Nwosu on an incomplete pass attempt. The hit left Fitzpatrick on the ground in pain, requiring a visit from trainers before being helped to the sideline.

Fitzpatrick did not return to the game, being ruled out with a hip injury, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke filled in.

Before exiting, Fitzpatrick was 3-of-6 for 13 yards.

With fans speculating that Fitzpatrick could miss a significant amount of time, many suggested Washington could potentially sign free-agent veteran Cam Newton, who was released by the New England Patriots earlier this month.

Newton and Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera are very familiar with one another. Rivera coached Newton on the Carolina Panthers from 2011-19.

The duo found some success with the Panthers, winning the NFC Championship in 2015 before falling to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.

However, Rivera confirmed shortly after Newton's release from the Patriots that he wasn't interested in signing the former MVP. But things could be very different entering Week 2, especially if Fitzpatrick suffered a significant injury.
