What was said during halftime that sparked historic Vikings comeback?

Kirk Cousins had overcome a 24-point deficit already in his 11-year NFL career, so staging a 33-point comeback presumably wasn’t as daunting of a task for him as one might think.

In a recent interview with MMQB’s Albert Breer, Cousins recalled a sure level of calmness in Minnesota’s locker room as cornerback Patrick Peterson and offensive line coach Chris Kuper put Minnesota’s undertaking into perspective.

“All we need is five touchdowns,” Peterson confidently stated, according to Cousins.

“[Kuper] said it to me before we started the second half,” Cousins stated. “He said, ‘Let’s score 35 unanswered,’” Cousins said. “I thought, ‘I mean, that’d be great. But that doesn’t just happen.’”

While the Vikings didn’t score 35 unanswered like Kuper had hoped, they did outscore the Colts 36-3 in the second half and reeled off four straight touchdown drives spanning from the final two minutes of the third to the final two minutes of the fourth.

Cousins completed 34-of-54 passes for 460 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions, including 417 in the second half, as he led Minnesota to a 39-36 overtime win — engineering the biggest comeback in NFL history.

It also marked the second-most single-game passing yards in Vikings history as well.
