Why Broncos need another RB despite early free-agent signing

The Broncos added some running back depth during free agency, but they need reinforcements.

On Tuesday, Denver and free-agent RB Samaje Perine agreed to sign a two-year deal worth $7.5 million with another $1 million in incentives, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The 27-year-old RB is a dependable third-down back who rushed for 394 yards on 95 attempts last season (4.1 yards per carry). He's not a feature back, though, because he's never run for 1,000 yards in seven seasons.

Denver RB Javonte Williams tore his ACL/LCL in Week 4 last season. According to ESPN's Jeff Legwold and Ben Baby, he's still recovering, and the Broncos won't know if he's ready until later this Summer.

Therefore, Denver must ensure it has another option if Williams can't start next season.

The Broncos could re-sign free agent Latavius Murray, who became the team's leading rusher, running for 703 yards in 12 games. Additionally, the former Pro Bowler played two seasons under new Denver HC Sean Payton in New Orleans.

Other free-agent RBs are available, including Miles Sanders, who was fifth in the NFL in rushing yards (1,269), and Jamaal Williams, who led the NFL in rushing TDs (17). Each has a market value below $8M annually, according to Spotrac.

Per ESPN's Dan Graziano, multiple teams believe Denver will trade one of its WRs. A deal could acquire more draft capital, making it easier for the organization to select an RB.

Regardless, the Broncos went 5-12 last season because all facets of their offense struggled, especially the ground attack ranked 21st in yards. They need assets to prevent another disastrous season.
