Shortly after the NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens stayed active in their pursuit of roster improvements, signing cornerback Rock Ya-Sin to a one-year contract.
Due to the timing of the move, the Ravens' addition of Ya-Sin largely flew under the radar - but it may not stay that way for long this coming season.
A second-round pick in 2019, Ya-Sin spent the first three years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts before being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders last offseason.
Across four seasons, the 26-year-old Ya-Sin has played in 52 games with 38 starts - but aside from starting experience, what will the former Temple standout bring to Baltimore? Here's Ravens coach John Harbaugh's scouting report ...
"He's a young, veteran corner," Harbaugh said. "We've always appreciated the way he plays. He's a very diligent player, he can run, he's a good tackler. He's a tough player, a good man and zone player – both. We were impressed when we talked to him, and (we're) just happy to get it done. So, we're looking forward to seeing how he does."
Ya-Sin, who stands 6-0, 192 pounds, started nine of 11 games played for the Raiders last year, logging 45 tackles and seven passes defended while battling a knee injury that ultimately cut his season short.
In Baltimore, Ya-Sin joins a cornerbacks room that includes Marlon Humphrey, Brandon Stephens, Jalyn Armour-Davis and rookie fifth-round pick Kyu Blu-Kelly. There's certainly a path for the "young veteran" to start opposite of Humphrey, perhaps sooner rather than later.
Ya-Sin's ability to play both man and zone provides versatility for Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, who's excited to get to work with his new corner this summer.
"With Rock, the best compliment I can give is he's physical, and he's such an aggressive player, and just that type of demeanor just fits in great here," Macdonald said. "And he looks great out there moving around. So, we're excited to see what he can do and what he can bring to the table for us."
That being said, the Ravens may not be done adding to the cornerbacks room; Marcus Peters, who started all 14 games he played in this past season, remains a free agent, among many others.
So, while adding Ya-Sin certainly helps Baltimore's comfort with its secondary, Harbaugh didn't turn down the idea of continuing to add.
"I don't think you can ever really close the door on any personnel move," said Harbaugh. "Whoever it might be, you can probably ask me about Marcus and whatever other corners are out there - I would say you don't close the door on good players and good people. We'll see how it goes."
But regardless of who else comes and goes, the Ravens are excited to have Ya-Sin ... and believe his physicality, aggression, scheme versatility and character will lead to positive results this coming season.
