Why history says Chiefs will win Super Bowl LVIII

The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will officially face off in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11 in what will be a much-anticipated game. However, history believes the writing is already on the wall for who will be hoisting this year's Vince Lombardi Trophy.

According to NFL Research's Tony Holzman-Escareno, this will be the fourth Super Bowl rematch among head coaches all time. Head coaches Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan join Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick, Jimmy Johnson and Marv Levy and Chuck Noll and Tom Landry in the select group.

What is the significance of the rematch?

In each of the previous three instances, the coach to win the first one also won the second. That means if history repeats itself, the Chiefs will win their third Super Bowl in five seasons.

Kansas City defeated San Francisco 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV four years ago and now has a good opportunity to prove it is still the better team.

Of course, the rosters are different this time around. But there are still several of the same key players, such as QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, DT Chris Jones, WR Deebo Samuel, TE George Kittle, LB Fred Warner and DE Nick Bosa.

The Chiefs do have arguably the worst team in Mahomes' career as their wide receivers have been inconsistent all season and TE Travis Kelce is older.

Mahomes continues to prove to be potentially the greatest player of all time at just 28 and add in the fact that he's playing with the best defense in his career.

Although the 49ers will do their best to get their revenge, as long as Mahomes stays healthy, Kansas City should be the favorite to win the game and continue the Super Bowl rematch streak among head coaches.
