Why the Vikings roster reload is one of the most intriguing this offseason

Although the Vikings went 13-4 and won the NFC North last season, the franchise is potentially changing the guard this offseason.

Making drastic changes after such a successful season may seem like a curious decision, but Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer believes he understands it.

"To me, the answer brings you to one of the NFL's most interesting and most overlooked team-building stories of the 2023 offseason," Breer wrote in a piece looking at the Vikings' offseason. "Because as certain pieces are coming out, others are being built up."

Minnesota released franchise cornerstones in wide receiver Adam Thielen and linebacker Eric Kendricks. It could also trade or release running back Dalvin Cook. Nonetheless, the organization believes this avoids a franchise teardown.

One young piece Minnesota developed was WR Justin Jefferson. Last season, the 24-year-old led the league in receptions (128) and receiving yards (1,809). He also earned a first-team All-Pro nomination.

Two years remain on Jefferson's contract, meaning he'll be up for an extension soon. Per Spotrac, his market value is a four-year deal worth $26.7M annually. Holding on to pricey veterans makes less sense when saving room for a Jefferson extension is a must.

Also, letting go of veterans on pricey contracts gives Minnesota more financial flexibility. Per OverTheCap, the Vikings have $9.5M in cap room. Trading Cook after the June 1 deadline will save $11M.

Minnesota's decisions are challenging, but they could be the right ones since they give the franchise room to make big moves and retain rising stars. Additionally, the Vikings must take risks to capture their first Super Bowl.
