Will Browns start rookie or newly signed veteran in Week 2?

The Browns have an important decision to make ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Steelers. Will they decide to go with upside or experience?

Following Cleveland's Week 1 win over the Bengals, tests revealed that right tackle Jack Conklin tore his ACL and MCL and will have season-ending surgery. The team has since signed veteran offensive tackle Ty Nsekhe.

However, rookie right tackle Dawand Jones is a viable replacement as well. Who will start?

Jones had a great preseason in which he allowed zero sacks and just two pressures on 111 pass-blocking snaps, according to NFL Rookie Watch. He also allowed zero sacks, pressures or hurries on 20 pass-blocking snaps after taking over for Conklin Sunday.

But with quite the challenge ahead, Cleveland may opt to go with Nsekhe, who has served as a reliable backup and bounced around the league since going undrafted in 2009. The 37-year-old has played in 103 games, starting 25 in his career.

Whoever gets the nod must face LB T.J. Watt, the 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who had three sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, one tackle for a loss and five quarterback hits in Week 1.

Although it might be his toughest challenge the entire season, Jones will have the early lead to start. Head coach Kevin Stefanski already said the coaching staff will have him ready.

"There are no redshirts in the NFL. So, you never know when that opportunity is going to come. It happened in the first half of the first game," Stefanski told reporters, via Fred Greetham of The Orange and Brown report. "He will continue to get better. Obviously, going into Pittsburgh is tough on every team that goes into that place."

If anyone has the physical capabilities to take on Watt, it's Jones, who stands at a massive 6-foot-8, 375 pounds. The question is whether he can consistently hang with arguably the best pass rusher in all of football.
