Will Russell Wilson's diet secret help Broncos QB recapture his Pro Bowl form?

Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson revealed how he trimmed down this offseason: avoiding macaroni and cheese.

"I'm a huge, like, if there's mac and cheese at a restaurant, you gotta try it. I've been staying away from that," Wilson said of his 15-pound weight loss (down to 215 pounds) Thursday on FanDuel's "Up and Adams." "But the biggest thing is trying to be as lean as possible, feeling good. You know, working out multiple times a day, so I feel great."

Wilson's stricter diet is in service of helping regain some of his mobility. In 2022, the Super Bowl champion tried to become more of a pocket passer and failed. In 15 games, he went 4-11 as a starter, logged a career-low 84.6 passer rating and was sacked a career-high 55 times.

Denver head coach Sean Payton has already seen a difference over the past two weeks of training camp.

"Man, his movement skills have been impressive," Payton said in a Thursday news conference. "His location has been really good. His last two weeks have been really impressive."

Wilson moving around more will not only allow him to extend plays with his legs but also stretch the field with his arm. Per NFL Next Gen Stats, the 34-year-old finished with the second-most yards (1,008) on deep attempts (passes that are 20 air yards or more) despite being pressured on 40 percent of them.

Wilson's improvement could open the door for Payton to be more aggressive in playcalling. This will be necessary for Denver, a team in need of big play dynamism after finishing last in points scored in 2022.

Since the Broncos can't move on from Wilson this season due to his massive 2023 cap hit ($22M), Denver fans can be reassured that the Pro Bowler is making hard culinary sacrifices to reestablish himself as a franchise QB.
