With Bill Belichick, Pete Carroll gone, longest-tenured HCs fill playoff field
With Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll gone from their respective head-coaching gigs with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, the list of longest-tenured NFL head coaches is a group that will be well-represented in the upcoming playoffs.
Each of the top six longest-tenured men have their teams in the postseason.
In the AFC, John Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens are the No. 1 seed, Doug McDermott's Buffalo Bills are the No. 2 seed, Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs are seeded third and Mike Tomlin's Pittsburgh Steelers are No. 7. AP Coach of the Year candidates DeMeco Ryans of the No. 4 Houston Texans and Kevin Stefanski of the No. 5 Cleveland Browns, meanwhile, are in just their first and fourth seasons at the helm, while Mike McDaniel is leading sixth-seeded Miami Dolphins in only his second year.
Carroll had been on the sidelines in Seattle for 14 seasons, meaning the longest-tenured NFC head coaches are now Kyle Shanahan of the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers and Sean McVay with the No. 6 Los Angeles Rams.
For the remaining NFC postseason squads, Matt LaFleur is in his fifth campaign with the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers and Mike McCarthy is in his fourth year with the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys. Both Dan Campbell and Nick Sirianni of the No.3 Detroit Lions and No. 5 Philadelphia Eagles are in their third year with the clubs, while Todd Bowles is in his second season with the fourth-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
For teams not in the playoffs, it's already been a whirlwind of an offseason that only began less than one week ago. There's been heavy turnover when it comes to head-coaching positions, to say the least.
