With playoff hopes dwindling, questions about Broncos QB Russell Wilson's future loom

A shocking loss to the New England Patriots diminished the Broncos' playoff chances, leading to more questions about quarterback Russell Wilson's future in Denver.

Following the 26-23 upset, Wilson claimed he's not focused on 2024 and wants to help the organization win its fourth Super Bowl title.

"I'm just worried about next week and playing great football," Wilson said, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "I came here to win and win a championship for us and to find a way to do that. I obviously love being here with these guys, these teammates. I'm' excited to keep playing ball and playing hard for us."

The nine-time Pro Bowler's play has dramatically improved under head coach Sean Payton. Through 15 games, he's completed 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards, 26 TDs, eight interceptions and an above-average 98 passer rating.

Still, the Broncos (7-8) aren't getting a return on a massive investment. In 2022, they dealt two first-rounders (and more) for the former Seattle Seahawks star and gave him a five-year, $242.5M contract with $161M guaranteed. The 35-year-old is 11-19 in two seasons as Denver's starter.

Moving on from Wilson is costly but possible. If the Broncos release him with a post-June 1 designation, it will result in a $35.4M cap hit and no cap losses or savings, per Over The Cap. As Tankathon projected Denver will have the 14th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, within range to select a potential replacement.

Plus, it's a deep QB class. Talented prospects, such as Washington's Michael Penix Jr., North Carolina's Drake Maye, LSU's Jayden Daniels and Southern Cal's Caleb Williams, head the list.

Wilson's best option is revising his deal and agreeing to take a pay cut. It would give the Broncos more cap room, which could help them improve their roster and end their eight-year playoff drought.
