Would Jets' Robert Saleh bench Zach Wilson during Raiders game?

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh spoke with reporters Friday and didn't completely shoot down the idea that he could bench a struggling Zach Wilson during the upcoming "Sunday Night Football" game at the 4-5 Las Vegas Raiders.

"That’s more hypothetical" Saleh responded to a question about the subject, per Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "The reality is to pull a quarterback to spark change, it’s my opinion, it’s got to be crystal clear that it’s [on] him. When you’ve got everybody with their hand in the cookie jar, it’s really hard to justify blaming one human."

That's hardly an emphatic "no."

Saleh insisted earlier this week that everybody associated with the New York offense, including Wilson, must be better, and the coach later said that nobody in the front office is making him play the 24-year-old ahead of career backup Tim Boyle or practice squad option Trevor Siemian. However, whispers suggesting Wilson is losing teammates for a second straight year are growing louder, and the numbers indicate he isn't part of the solution even if he isn't New York's only problem on offense.

According to ESPN stats, Wilson heads into the weekend ranked last in the entire NFL among qualified players with a 32.3 adjusted QBR on the season. Meanwhile, the 4-4 Jets are 31st with an average of 272.9 offensive yards per game.

Al Iannazzone of Newsday mentioned on Tuesday that "there is no plan to elevate" Siemian from the practice squad by Sunday night. As for Boyle, the 29-year-old has attempted a total of 106 career regular-season passes.

"Yeah, you can say, 'We’ll blame it on somebody and let’s just do something,'" Saleh added during his comments. "But is it what’s necessary at that time to derail whatever could be and just create all sorts of other problems in the future? There is a global aspect to it, to any position...When everyone has their hand in the cookie jar, including coaches, it’s hard to justify in my mind, making a move just to make a move."

If Wilson breaks that cookie jar via a couple of first-half turnovers at Allegiant Stadium, Saleh may have to ground the 2021 first-round draft pick for the good of everyone involved.
