WR Brandin Cooks wants no part of Texans 'rebuild'

Wide receiver Brandin Cooks has addressed his future with the Houston Texans following yet another disappointing season.

"I'm not going into this offseason thinking I want to be a part of a rebuild," Cooks said on Monday, according to DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.

Cooks was speaking less than 24 hours after it was learned that the Texans were moving on from head coach Lovie Smith after just one campaign. Last January, Houston made David Culley a one-season-and-done coach.

Cooks signed a two-year extension with the Texans in April that reportedly was worth up to $39.6 million and included $36 million in guaranteed money. The 29-year-old took to Twitter in early November seemingly to vent frustrations over not being sent elsewhere ahead of the trade deadline, and he later admitted he didn't "necessarily want to be part of a 'rebuild'" at his age.

"I'm not looking at it as far as being a part of a rebuild, however that looks," Cooks added on Monday. "That's why I trust my camp and my representation to be able to get a map from here to there and to see what that looks like to be a part of something that has a trusted plan."

According to ESPN, Cooks finished the season leading the Texans with 57 catches, 93 targets, and 699 receiving yards. He was second among Houston players with three touchdown receptions.

Cooks is owed $18 million fully guaranteed for 2023 per the terms of his deal. It's unclear if Houston will shop him to would-be buyers this offseason ahead of the draft.
