Big performance at Super Bowl could help Travis Kelce make history

The Kelce brothers, Travis and Jason, are just one of the many subplots to the Super Bowl LVII storyline.

Travis Kelce, the superstar tight end for the Chiefs, might have a chance to add yet another storyline and make some history of his own if he can become the first tight end to ever win Super Bowl MVP.

It is one of the few positions that has never seen a player take home that honor, but given his role and importance within the Chiefs offense he might have the best chance of any player at the position to ever win the award.

According to Oddschecker, Kelce is entering the game with the third-best MVP odds, trailing only the game's two quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.

Kelce has always been one of the main focal points of the Chiefs offense, but he has taken on an even greater importance this season after the team re-did its wide receiver room with the trade of Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs are also dealing with some major injuries at receiver going into the game with Juju Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman and Kadarius Toney all being banged up. Hardman is unlikely to play.

In two playoff games Kelce has already caught 21 passes (on 25 targets) for 176 yards and three touchdowns. He not only leads the Chiefs in every one of those categories, there is not another pass-catcher on the team that is even close to him in terms of being a target for Mahomes.

No other player on the team has caught more than seven passes this postseason (14 behind Kelce), while nobody has been targeted more than 10 times (15 behind Kelce).

During the regular season he was targeted on 17 percent of the Chiefs passes (110 out of 651) and accounted for 25 percent of the team's passing yards. Just for comparison, he was only targeted on 13 percent of the team's passes a year ago and accounted for only 22 percent of the team's passing yards.

Add in the possibility of Mahomes needing to utilize more of a quick passing game due to his own ankle injury, and Kelce could be in line for a massive performance.

Kelce is already regarded as one of the greatest tight ends ever, and if he can add a Super Bowl MVP to an already incredible resume it would only add to his career achievements.
