Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has been accused of prioritizing his job over the health and safety of rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart following his firing.
The Giants parted ways with Daboll after Sunday’s 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears, which left the team with a 2-8 record through 10 games. Daboll’s time as head coach ended with a 20-40-1 regular-season record and comes about despite the hype surrounding the new QB in New York.
The team noted that he would be replaced by offensive coordinator Mike Kafka on an interim basis.
Daboll faced an uphill climb entering the 2025 season with a young roster, instability at the quarterback position and the season-ending injury to star second-year wide reciver Malik Nabers in Week 2. That was followed by a gruesome ankle leg injury to rookie running back Cam Skattebo that ended his first season. Dart has also dealt with injuries this year, from which the recent criticism stems.
NBC’s Chris Simms discussed Daboll’s handling of the QB’s injuries on the “Dan Patrick Show” this week, and both men agreed that the coach was more concerned about saving his job than the rookie’s health.
Discussing Daboll's thought process, Simms said: "It's like we got to win this one or I might get fired. I'm gonna ruin the rookie quarterback's career today and run him up the middle 75 times, but I want to win the keep my job."
Patrick responded: "He's knocking on the blue tent and getting Jaxson Dart out there. I went, 'Wow.' Right? This was a troubling situation because it really felt like Brian Daboll knew, 'I can't put Russell Wilson in there.'"
Simms agreed: "I'm totally with you. And then even last week (Dart) gets concussed and then he comes and plays two plays and then somebody with some brains went wait, that guy's brain's not working functionally here. Let's get him out of the football game."
The former head coach seemed as if he was trying to rush Dart out of the blue tent after the latter entered for an evaluation following a worrying hit to the head in a win against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6.
Daboll was shown arguing with team physician Dr. Scott Rodeo on the sideline.
"I apologized directly to our team physician," Daboll told reporters after the game. "We were getting ready to go for it on a potential fourth down. I would have burned a timeout if he could have come out there. I was asking how long was it going to take. You want your guy out there, not at risk of anything else."
Later on, Daboll said, "I just stuck my head in to see how our quarterback was doing. In no way would I want a player to come back out there that wasn't ready to play. I have great respect for that process.”
Dart was able to finish the game, but his latest outing, the Week 10 loss to Chicago, resulted in him sustaining a concussion. He was still allowed to return to the field for a few snaps before he was officially ruled out.
