Buccaneers draft Florida QB Kyle Trask as Tom Brady's potential successor

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers know Tom Brady doesn't have much time left in the NFL. Because of that, they selected Florida's Kyle Trask in the second round of the NFL draft on Friday as the seven-time Super Bowl champion's potential successor.

Trask was the sixth quarterback taken in this year's draft and the first taken after the first round. Bucs head coach Bruce Arians lauded the young signal-caller, saying he "fought his a-- off to get where he's at," per ESPN's Jenna Laine.

"Everything about [Trask] — he's accurate, he's smart, he's tough, he knows how to move inside the pocket," Arians said, before addressing Trask's lack of mobility. "We don't draft guys to run, we draft them to throw. And he's accurate as hell."

Trask became the first Gators quarterback drafted since Tim Tebow went 25th overall in 2010.

In his senior season at Florida, the 23-year-old completed 68.9% of his passes for 4,283 yards and 43 touchdowns against eight interceptions. His 43 passing touchdowns led the FBS last season, and he broke Danny Wuerffel's school record of 39, tying him for third on the SEC single-season record list.

The Buccaneers can take plenty of time developing Trask. Brady is under contract through the 2022 season and has said in the past he's considering playing beyond age 45.

General manager Jason Licht confirmed that Brady will play for as long as he wants to. He also said he had a conversation with Brady about drafting another quarterback.

"Tom's the ultimate team guy, and I don't think he's worried about anybody taking his job," Licht said. "He was totally fine. He understands. He wants what's best for the team. So Tom's gonna play as long as Tom wants to play. He's earned that right."

Trask added that he isn't expecting to take over as the starter any time soon, saying that he can't wait to learn from one of the greatest of all time.

"They definitely have a great system going on there in Tampa Bay. The opportunity to learn [from] one of the greats I watched growing up, that's been one of my favorites — to have that opportunity is truly remarkable," Trask said of Brady. "But nevertheless, I'm gonna come in and work my tail off and do whatever I can to help this team."
