Chargers Exploring 2 Options After Latest IR Update
NFL: AFC Wild Card Round-Los Angeles Chargers at Houston Texans Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

In the wake of adding Khalil Mack to injured reserve, the Los Angeles Chargers are actively evaluating their pass-rushing depth, recently working out edge defenders Clelin Ferrell and Rashad Weaver, according to multiple sources, including The Athletic.

Mack will miss at least four games, as stipulated by IR regulations.

Both players bring NFL experience and intriguing upside, though their recent careers have been marked by roster uncertainty.

Clelin Ferrell: Former Top-Five Pick Searching for Stability

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

Ferrell, 28, was drafted by the Raiders with the No. 4 overall pick out of Clemson in 2019. He completed his rookie deal—a four-year, $31.3 million contract with a $20.8 million signing bonus—without having his fifth-year option picked up.

Since leaving Las Vegas, Ferrell has bounced between teams, signing one-year contracts with the 49ers in 2023 and the Commanders in 2024. Washington ultimately released him after the preseason, despite Ferrell starting 10 games and recording 26 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble.

A key point in Ferrell’s recent contracts has been limited guarantees. His $2 million deal with Washington came with only $100K guaranteed, signaling that roster security was tenuous at best. While the Commanders could theoretically revisit him after guarantee vesting dates, the likelihood of a reunion appears low.

Ferrell’s 2023-24 production shows consistency in certain areas—3.5 sacks in both seasons, nine QB hits, and four tackles for loss last season—but he has yet to fully match the expectations of a top-five pick. His versatility and experience could still make him an attractive depth piece for the Chargers’ pass rush rotation.

Rashad Weaver: Rebuilding Momentum in New York

Rashad Weaver, 27, has experienced a rollercoaster career since being selected 135th overall by the Titans in 2021. He spent time with Tennessee, the Texans, the Rams, and most recently the Jets, often facing roster cutdowns and limited playing time.

Despite his uneven track record, Weaver impressed during offseason workouts with the Jets, showing disruption and playmaking ability. Weaver is approaching camp with a focused, grounded mindset.

“For me right now, it’s gonna be to continue to attack. Bring the fight to that O-Lineman. They gotta block me, I don’t gotta block them, kind of that mindset,” Weaver told Jets reporter Caroline Hendershot.

He added: “I’m in a place right now where I’m just earning my role. Work every day, kind of head down, 3% a day, and when you look up in a couple of months, you’re where you want to be. It’ll all pay off.”

Chargers’ Edge Rusher Strategy

Los Angeles’ workouts of Ferrell and Weaver signal a strategic focus on pass-rushing depth. The Chargers’ current defensive rotation has questions to answer, particularly after injuries and roster fluctuations over the past seasons. Adding experienced edge players who can compete immediately offers insurance and potential rotational flexibility.

Both Ferrell and Weaver bring contrasting profiles—Ferrell offers veteran experience and a starting pedigree, while Weaver brings youth, potential, and a chip-on-the-shoulder mentality. For a Chargers team looking to bolster its defensive front, both options are worth a close look.

The Chargers’ offseason and early camp moves suggest they are leaving no stone unturned in building a defensive line capable of supporting a playoff push, whether that means giving Ferrell another chance or betting on Weaver’s resurgence.
