Chiefs CB Charvarius Ward gives back to his hometown for Thanksgiving

Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive backs have been hard at work this week making a difference in their communities, with Charvarius Ward being the latest member of the defense to be recognized for his generosity ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving celebration. Traveling back to his hometown of McComb, Mississippi for the bye week, Ward facilitated the distribution of almost 300 turkeys to those in need.

Check out the pictures from the event here, which was covered by the local news in the area on Tuesday:

According to the report, about $10,000 of food was donated through the Mississippi Food Network and McComb’s local branch of the Boys and Girls club. With food insecurity becoming a growing concern for many families, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the donation was crucial to members of the community who might not have otherwise been able to procure a bird for Thanksgiving.

Ward has played a big role on Kansas City’s defense this season, but his work during the bye week is far more impactful than anything the game of football has to offer. Making a difference in local communities is a key part of the Chiefs’ identity as an organization, and a fundamental value the team focuses on instilling in its players as soon as they sign in Kansas City.

The event in McComb came just after Chiefs’ safety Tyrann Mathieu gave away birds in Johnson County, Kansas on Monday, distributing about 500 turkeys at the Giving Hope KC Food Pantry. Everybody on the team seems committed to being a light in dark times during the holiday season, with the defensive backs leading the way with their good deeds this week.

Kansas City’s secondary might be scary to opponents on Sundays, but they definitely have a soft spot in their hearts for those in their communities who need a hand. Both Ward and Mathieu are likely to play in the team’s next game against the Broncos, which was flexed to primetime on Tuesday.
