Chiefs GM says team could assess Patrick Mahomes' contract situation soon

Even though Patrick Mahomes just signed a massive 10-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, he could still be in line for a new deal very soon.

Mostly because the rest of the NFL's starting quarterback market has not only caught up to his deal but also exceeded it.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said this week that when a couple of other starting quarterback contracts around the league get completed, specifically Cincinnati with Joe Burrow and Los Angeles with Justin Herbert, the Chiefs will assess where they are with Mahomes' deal.

"I think that this organization and the relationship we have with Pat will always be working to make sure that we’re doing right by everybody," Veach said at his pre-draft press conference this week, via ProFootballTalk. "There will be a couple more contracts that still have to get done — Burrow and Herbert — and once they do, I think you kind of look at everything and assess where you are and what you can do and take it from there.”

The deal Mahomes signed back in 2020 carries an average annual value of $45 million per season. 

That value has already been exceeded by five other quarterbacks, including Aaron Rodgers, Deshaun Watson, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray and most recently Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia.

It is entirely possible that Burrow and Herbert could also exceed that value on their next deals. 

Mahomes' contract has already become a steal for the Chiefs given what the rest of the quarterback market around the league is making. He is not only the best quarterback in the league and a generational talent, but he also has something no other quarterback ahead of him in terms of pay has: multiple Super Bowl rings. With a very strong chance to add to that total in the coming seasons. 

Given Veach's comment about wanting to do right by everybody, they do not intend to allow Mahomes to be the seventh or eighth highest-paid quarterback in the league for very long. If Burrow and/or Herbert add to the list of players that get a more lucrative contract than him it stands to reach that the Chiefs are going to work to change that very quickly.
