Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes told reporters Thursday that the recent criticisms of his play from former teammate Tyreek Hill took him by surprise.
Hill, 28, earned Pro Bowl nods in all six of his seasons with the Chiefs before he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in March. Last week, the speedy receiver released the first episode of a new podcast called "It Needed to be Said" and took a few shots at his former quarterback.
"I'm surprised a little just because I feel like we love Tyreek here," Mahomes said, via ESPN's Adam Teicher. "We've always loved him. We still love him. I saw him out at Formula 1 in Miami. I'm sure it had something to do with trying to get his podcast some stuff and get it rolling.
"I still love Tyreek. He's a one-of-a-kind player. In coach [Andy] Reid's offense it takes the whole team. This offense was rolling before I got here."
On his podcast, Hill said that Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a more accurate passer than Mahomes. Hill also said Mahomes will be in for "a long day" when he returns to the field without the receiver.
.@cheetah also added he wants people to know how much easier he made on Patrick Mahomes to play QB: "He know that without the Cheetah on the field, he know that, ‘Hey, Pat you’re gonna have a long day today.'”pic.twitter.com/T9SsK9ptIc

Hill's agent Drew Rosenhaus later appeared on the podcast and said that the receiver was "underutilized and wasn't fully appreciated" by the Chiefs.
In six seasons, Hill recorded 7,349 yards from scrimmage with 62 total touchdowns. In 2021, he was third in NFL in receptions with 111, and he finished with 1,239 receiving yards.
