Commanders Owner Josh Harris Statement After Coaching Changes
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

On Thanksgiving Day, the Washington Commanders lost to the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys by a lopsided score of 45-10. Following the defeat, the Commanders made significant changes to their coaching staff, firing defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer.

Washington coach Ron Rivera will now presumably step in as the defensive play caller.

Commanders' owner Josh Harris released a statement following the quick changes to the coaching staff.

"This morning, I spoke with coach Rivera and he recommended that the team make changes at defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach," Harris said. "I accepted those recommendations and want to thank Jack and Brent for their contributions to the Commanders. We wish them and their families well moving forward."

Washington's defense is ranked last in the NFL in terms of points allowed per game (29.2) and have allowed at least 30 points seven times in 12 games this year.

"I feel exactly how our fans feel today: disappointed and frustrated," Harris said. "It's how our players and staff feel as well. I knew our first season of ownership would include challenges along the way, and we will not shy away from hard work, nor will we be deterred by adversity. As Coach Rivera and I discussed, all of our energy for the remainder of the season will be focused on playing better, more consistent football and developing our players while intently evaluating the areas in which we need to improve this offseason."

The Commanders are now 4-8 this season following the loss to the Cowboys on Thursday. Harris knows that Washington has not exceeded any expectations for their fans this year, but is more interested in looking towards progressing in future seasons than dwelling on their failed performances this year.

"Our fans deserve a team that can compete with the NFL's best and win sustainably over the long-term," Harris said. "I will not waver from that mission. Thank you to our fans for the ways in which you've breathed new life into our franchise. We have not been good enough this season, but our resolve for the future is unbroken."
