The 2022 NFL season is fast approaching and there are a lot of new faces throughout the organization. With a new general manager and new head coach, this is going to be year one of a rebuild.

For the New York Giants, playoffs may not be completely realistic, so the front office is going to evaluate the players in a contract year. Whether it be injury or production, some of the key players on this team are in the final year of their contract and will have pressure to perform.

Here is a list of they key Giants players going into their final year.

Quarterback, Daniel Jones

There is no debate that the quarterback position is one of the most important position in all of sports. Daniel Jones is going into his fourth season as a Giant and has underwhelmed, holding a record of 12-25 in his 37 starts. He totals 45 touchdowns, 39 interceptions, 8398 yards throwing, and a total of 36 fumbles. Jones needs to do two things before he can be considered the future of this team, the first is to remain healthy. In addition, he needs to continue to cut back on the turnovers. He has done so every year, but with a full slate of games can he maintain control of the football.

Running Back, Saquon Barkley

Saquon Barkley came out of the gate on fire. He played 16 games, rushing for 1307 yards and 11 touchdowns, while recording 91 receptions for 721 yards and four more touchdowns. He won Offensive rookie of the year and was named to the Pro Bowl. After that injuries began to impact his game. He missed four games with a sprained ankle in 2019, tore his ACL week two in 2020. He then missed four games again in 2021 by spraining the same ankle. Unfortunately, even if Barkley is healthy and effective its possible the Giants trade him for draft picks at the trade deadline.

Wide Receiver, Darius Slayton

In his first two seasons, Darius Slayton appeared to be a consistent option for Daniel Jones. Slayton played in 30 games, caught 98 balls for 1491 yards and 11 touchdowns, but that changed in 2021. In 13 games, the receiver had career lows in targets, reception, yards and touchdowns. With other receivers on the roster, Slayton will need to make an impact in order to secure playing time or a future contract.

Line Backer, Blake Martinez

Blake Martinez became a leader at the linebacker position in 2020. In 16 starts he had 151 total tackles, 86 solo and five tackles for loss. There were a lot of high hopes for Martinez and the Giants defense, but he had an ACL injury that ended his season in week three. He is back and participating in drills at OTAs and if he gets back to his old self, he will have a big impact on the team and on his ability to get a new contract.

Defensive Back, Julian Love

As the second longest tenured player on the Giants defense Julian Love will finally get the opportunity to be a full time starter in the secondary. Exactly where he plays will be interesting because he as had snaps at free safety, box safety, slot corner, linebacker and boundary corner. He is a versatile piece, and if he plays well the Giants could offer a contract extension.
