Cowboys clearly are not happy with rookie eight weeks into the season, and it could lead to a roster move.

Dallas Cowboys fans hoped fifth-round rookie running back Jaydon Blue could exceed the expectations of being a Day 3 pick and rise as a significant weapon on offense early in his career.

So far, he hasn't. Heading into Week 9, Blue hasn't even won the backup job behind Javonte Williams. Not even veteran Miles Sanders landing on season-ending Injured Reserve has translated into him being the unquestioned RB2 in Dallas.

According to Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Blue still needs to show more consistency in games. Prior to Sanders' injury, Blue was a healthy scratch for the first four weeks of the season due to inconsistency. In Dallas' Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos, Blue rushed the ball a season-high eight times and showed more of the same. He averaged 3.6 yards per gain and had one fumble.

"Jaydon was inconsistent in the game," Schottenheimer told reporters on Wednesday. "He did some really good things, and there were some other things that he's got to do at a higher level. The fumble was a good hit, but he needs to hold on to the ball."

Schottenheimer was transparent about what he wants to see from the Cowboys' rookie running back, starting with physicality.

"He can continue to play and emphasize being more physical with and without the ball," the Cowboys coach added. "That’s real — that’s a young back learning the speed and physicality of the game. But to me, I’m always going to go back to the consistency. You can’t put the ball on the ground. You have to be on top of your blitz pickups. You have to do those things."

Although it's not like Blue is in Schottenheimer's doghouse, it's clear he has to do more to make the staff confident in him. For now, it's looking like his role as RB2 is going to be put on notice.

Schottenheimer teases competition for RB2 between Jaydon Blue and Malik Davis

The Cowboys' head coach even talked about running back being a "battle to watch," with practice squad RB Malik Davis being Blue's contender.

"I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about Malik Davis and the job he’s doing for us," Schottenheimer said. "We’re all about creating competition. It’s not just on the defensive side of the ball — it’s on offense as well. And that’ll be another battle to watch."

For Davis to play, however, the Cowboys will need to do some roster maneuvering to place him on the 53-man roster. Davis has been elevated to the gameday roster the maximum two times allowed. Dallas already has a lot of pending moves to make as they get ready to welcome back center Cooper Beebe (IR), Shavon Revel Jr. (NFI), and DeMarvion Overshown (PUP) in the coming weeks.
