The Dallas Cowboys need help in multiple key skill positions. Most speculation leading up to next month's NFL Draft has projected the team to use their No. 12 pick to satisfy this need on the offensive side of the ball.
Initial reports drooled over the possibility Boise State star - and Frisco native - Ashton Jeanty could fall to his hometown Cowboys.
In the weeks since the NFL Combine, more rumors have surfaced about Dallas potentially avoiding a top running back in the first round, whether Jeanty is available or not.
However, NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. still predicts the Cowboys to grab a high-end ball carrier with their first pick.
He has the Cowboys selecting North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton - who we scout as a contender to be the best back in the class.
These numbers from the Combine speak for themselves.
"No change on my Cowboys pick projection from my last mock draft," Kiper Jr. said.
"He is a home run hitter who could spark something in this Dallas running game, which has been dormant for the past two campaigns. The Cowboys averaged 4.0 yards per carry over that time, tied for fourth worst in the league."
Hampton is an intriguing prospect not just because of his measurements at the Combine, but also from his performance for the Tar Heels in recent years.
Hampton was a beast during his last two seasons of college football, surpassing 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns.
The possibility of the Cowboys drafting Hampton should be just as exciting as the initial dreams of Jeanty (who Kiper Jr. has going No. 6 to the Las Vegas Raiders).
While Dallas has already addressed the position this free agency, Kiper Jr. stands firm on his prediction for the Cowboys' first draft pick.
"So, even after signing Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders to low-risk deals, I still think the Cowboys could draft Hampton. He is the kind of difference-maker they need at the position..." Kiper Jr. said.
Hampton reportedly had an "amazing" meeting with the Cowboys during the Combine.
The NFL Draft will begin with the first round on April 24 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
