With Mike McCarthy out as head coach, there’s a new sheriff in town: Brian Schottenheimer. After serving as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer is ready to take the reins and turn the team back into a championship contender. It won’t be easy, but he’s bringing a fresh vision and a relentless attitude to the job. He’s already laying a new foundation and changing the culture of the organization — all centered around one word ...
Energy.
The team has started to buy into this culture, fully embracing the high-energy approach — every coach’s dream. And it’s not just the players committing to this standard; Schottenheimer is holding himself to it as well.
He even joked this offseason that his late father, the legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer, would be “looking down from heaven saying, ‘What are you doing?’” while watching his coaching style at practice. But he added that it’s a new era, and his energy is meant to fuel everyone else’s.
In a recent press conference, Schottenheimer explained:
“I believe that it’s the coach’s responsibility, first and foremost, to create a great practice environment. If we don’t have energy and we’re not into it and we’re not running around and we’re not talking s**, then the players aren’t going to be able to do that. Because they’re going to follow our lead.”*
So far, Schottenheimer’s tactics seem to be resonating with this squad. He plans to carry that same energy into training camp, which kicks off July 22. He hopes this high-flying approach propels the Cowboys to a playoff berth — and, ultimately, a chance at a championship.
And with the Dallas Cowboys having gone 29 years without a Super Bowl, and not even making an appearance in the NFC Championship Game during that time. "America's Team'' is eager to try anything to change the culture … and fast.
Maybe, as training camp approaches, "energy'' is the way.
