Cowboys Linked To Steal of Breece Hall Trade

FRISCO - For the Dallas Cowboys, it's now that time - open season on sometimes-fantastical trade ideas that entertain the audience without actually adding up.

But every once in a while, the blind-squirrel media finds itself a mock-trade nut.

So, how about Breece Hall to the Cowboys ... on the cheap?

The Cowboys learned some good things about 2024 starting running back Rico Dowdle, and there is a desire to keep him as he hits free agency. The scouting department here at The Star also thinks highly of local guy Ashton Jeanty, the Boise State standout who might be a match when Dallas picks at the No. 12 spot in Round 1 of the April NFL Draft.

But Hall is superior to Rico and more proven than Ashton.

And NFL contract website Spotrac is pitching a potential deal for Hall that qualifies as a Dallas steal.

In this urging, the New York Jets give up Hall, 23, in exchange for just a third- and a sixth-round pick.

Why so cheap? Frankly, we have no idea. But Spotrac says, "Running back appears to be one of the deeper positions on this Jets roster, setting them up to float Hall in trade discussions this March as they look to bulk up on draft picks for the pending rebuild.''

Really? Fine. Float away!

Hall did not put up gigantic numbers with a bad Jets team this year; he totaled 876 yards on 209 carries last season, an average of 4.2 yards per carry. He did catch 57 balls for 483 yards, so he is a weapon in that way.

That draft-capital total is piddling; Dallas would be hard-pressed to find a better back than Hall in the third round, and if this deal was real, could pass on Jeanty in Round 1 and beef up elsewhere.

Meanwhile, the salary ramifications here are nothing: The entirety of Hall's remain deal is $3.4 million and his employer has contractual control for two years.

The 5-11, 217-pound Hall is a dynamic playmaker of the sort Dallas - which with CeeDee Lamb really has just one of - is starving for.

Breece Hall in a Cowboys uniform represents an exciting answer in every single way. It seems fantastical that New York would really consider this.

But it should be a no-brainer for the Cowboys to do so.
