Dolphins hire five-time Pro Bowler Wes Welker as WRs coach

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel was hired as the Miami Dolphins new head coach on Sunday. He's taking one of his co-workers to South Beach with him.

McDaniel joined the 49ers in 2017 as their run game coordinator and held that job until he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2021. Welker was hired as San Francisco's wideouts coach in February 2019 after spending time with the Houston Texans as an offensive assistant and special teams assistant in 2017 and 2018.

Prior to becoming a coach, Welker put together a solid 12-year playing career in the NFL for five different teams. The undersized wide receiver signed as an undrafted free agent with the then-San Diego Chargers in 2004 and played one game with them before joining Miami later that season.

Over the next three years with the Dolphins, Welker recorded 96 receptions for 1,121 yards and one touchdown. Welker was then traded to the New England Patriots in March 2007 and his career took off.

During his six seasons and 93 regular-season games in New England from 2007 to 2012, No. 83 racked up 672 catches for 7,459 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns, leading the NFL in receptions in 2007 (112), 2009 (123) and 2011 (122). Welker also made five consecutive Pro Bowl teams from 2008 to 2012 and was named first team All-Pro in 2009 and 2011.

Welker finished his playing days with the Denver Broncos in 2013 and 2014, and then the then-St. Louis Rams in 2015.
