Falcons QB Feleipe Franks has 'full confidence' he can be Matt Ryan's backup

Atlanta Falcons quarterback AJ McCarron exited Saturday's 37-17 preseason loss to the Miami Dolphins in the first quarter with a right knee injury. Things aren't looking good for the veteran either, as he's set to undergo an MRI and is said to be "heartbroken" about the injury

McCarron was slated to back up Matt Ryan this season, but his loss leaves the Falcons with undrafted rookie Feleipe Franks as the only other quarterback on the roster.

Franks played the remainder of Saturday's game against Miami in McCarron's absence, completing four of nine passes for 46 yards and an interception. He completed two of nine passes for 16 yards in the preseason opener.

Despite his struggles, Frank is confident that he's ready to fill the No. 2 role.

"I have full confidence in myself," Franks said, via the team's website. "I feel like I'm starting to gain confidence in the group around me. I'm just going to put my head down and go to work. That's all it's about, learning from your mistakes. That's mindset with just about anything. I do feel like I have the capability to do that job."

McCarron's presence in Atlanta suggests the team is not comfortable with Franks being Ryan's backup this season. If that's the case, the Falcons will be looking for another quarterback this week.

Robert Griffin III, Blake Bortles and Josh McCown are among several quarterbacks still available.
