James missed the entire 2021 season after undergoing knee surgery, but worked as a receiver and return specialist for the San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to 2020. The 26-year-old James' best season came in 2019, when he recorded 849 all-purpose yards.
That year, James racked up 428 yards on 20 kickoff returns, 264 yards on 33 punt returns and six receptions for 165 yards and one touchdown through the air. The Middle Tennessee State product added 112 yards on seven kickoff returns and 49 yards on five punt returns in the 49ers three playoff games that winter as well.
James was used more as a receiver in 2020, setting career highs in targets (35), receptions (23) and receiving yards (394).
