Giants HC Brian Daboll impressed with QB Daniel Jones' work ethic, leadership

Even though New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll both previously offered high praise for quarterback Daniel Jones, it was widely expected the club would decline the fifth-year option attached to the signal-caller's rookie contract this spring. Big Blue made that call last week before the start of the 2022 NFL Draft, but Schoen later remarked that the Giants still "really like" the 24-year-old, who remains penciled in as their QB1 for now.

On Tuesday, Daboll spoke with WFAN personalities Tiki Barber and Brandon Tierney about what he's seen from Jones during his brief tenure with the organization that began in late January.

"All I’d say right now is these first three weeks that I’ve been around him, I’ve been impressed with his work ethic, his leadership," Daboll explained, according to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "Even when he’s with the guys — we just had a little football school right now – does a good job in the huddle. I want him to be himself as well, too. And I want him to not be afraid of consequences and pull the trigger and attack, have a positive mindset, and continue to grow and learn. And I want him to have some ownership as to what he feels comfortable with as well.

"It’s fine and dandy when you’re standing on the sideline calling plays but you’re not the one back there in the huddle. And you’re not the one pulling the trigger. So I think it’s a collaborative effort on some of the stuff that he likes. And continue to help him improve. And he’s got a great mindset, he’s got some good mental toughness about him. So we’re just taking it day-by-day. It’s been a good three-and-a-half weeks with him."

Since September 2019, Jones has appeared in 38 regular-season games and made 37 starts, but he missed the final six games of this past campaign due to a concerning neck injury he insists won't be a problem moving forward. He's also tossed 29 interceptions and lost 20 fumbles as a pro, and he'll likely find himself looking for a new gig next winter if he doesn't at least limit such costly miscues during the upcoming season.
