Giants’ roster move: G Wes Martin signed off Washington practice squad

The New York Giants filled the final spot on their 53-man roster on Monday night by signing guard Was Martin off the Washington Football Team practice squad.

The Giants had an open spot on the roster since placing Nick Gates on IR last week.

Martin, 6-foot-3, 315 pounds, was a 2019 fourth-round pick by Washington. Martin played in 25 regular-season games and one playoff game for Washington. The 25-year-old started 10 regular-season games, five at left guard and five at right guard.

Martin compiled Pro Football Focus grades of 44.8 and 51.7 in his two seasons with the Football Team.

Three-year starter and two-time team captain who combines brains and brawn at his left guard spot. Like most Indiana blockers, he’s well-schooled and ahead of the game from a technique standpoint. He has functional athleticism but is better suited firing out than pulling or playing in space. He has NFL strength, but he plays with a lack of knee bend that can limit his ability to anchor in both run and pass blocking.

The Giants’ backup offensive linemen are now tackle Matt Peart, center/guard Matt Skura and Martin. They have guard Cole Banwart, center Jonotthan Harrison and tackle Korey Cunningham on the practice squad.
