The 49ers are likely to be sellers in a weak offseason quarterback market that’ll include Jimmy Garoppolo, but a few X-factors could shake things up a lot.

It’s a bad year to be in desperate need of a quarterback heading into 2022.

It’s a good year if your team is looking to offboard a starting-caliber quarterback.

Thankfully, the San Francisco 49ers fall into the latter category. Looking to implement their high-profile 2021 rookie, Trey Lance, into the starting quarterback gig from this point onward, veteran signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo has become that excess commodity who’ll all but assuredly be moved this offseason.

For months now, we’ve been talking about possible landing spots for Jimmy G this offseason. And it seems that unless another team out there is dead-set on its starter, that team is somehow “possibly” in the running for Garoppolo, too.

Crazy NFL world.

In other offseasons, Garoppolo might not command anything close to the kind of return the Niners probably wind up getting in 2022. Perhaps by sheer luck and how the market panned out, San Francisco is poised to benefit by being sellers in a quarterback-sellers market.

That said, there are still a lot of unknowns, X-factors and proverbial “dominos to fall” that could all ultimately influence what happens between Jimmy G and a would-be 49ers trade this offseason.

To better understand what faces the Niners and their likely biggest move of 2022, let’s break down some of that context and better try to understand how the market will impact both Garoppolo and San Francisco’s hopes of moving him.

Starting off by understanding which teams need quarterbacks and those that could be potentially on the hunt for one.
