If Broncos are gearing up to chase a QB, GM George Paton's not tipping his hand

After trading away outside linebacker Von Miller for two high draft picks and giving contract extensions to wide receivers Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick, the Denver Broncos appear to be gearing up to add a high-profile quarterback to the mix in 2022.

That’s the speculation, anyway, but general manager George Paton isn’t ready going to tip his hand.

“No, we’re just trying to get better as a football team and win games,” Paton said Monday when asked if the team re-signed Sutton and Patrick in part to attract QBs to Denver. “These guys help us win football games. You can’t have enough weapons and now we have two really good ones.”

With 11 draft picks and plenty of salary cap space, Paton will have the resources to pursue his QB of choice in 2022, if he chooses to. Paton wasn’t willing to specifically say he’s planning to target a QB, but the GM did note that he has the ability to go many directions in the offseason.

“We have the resources to do whatever we want,” Paton said. “Moving forward, we’re going to have a lot of cap room and we’re going to have cash.

“We have 11 draft picks, so we have a lot of flexibility and I always talk about flexibility, but we do. We do have a lot of flexibility moving forward and we locked up two of our primary free agents.”

Whether it’s through free agency, the draft or via a trade, Denver seems likely to bring in at least one new QB in 2022, regardless of what Paton says publicly.
