Is Philip Rivers eyeing a return to NFL?

Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has been retired for less than a year, but it doesn't appear he's checking into the pro football retirement home any time soon.

Don't call it a comeback? Well, at least not yet.

“I’m just going to stay ready," Rivers, 39, told the Los Angeles Times. "I want to make sure I’m very clear: I’m not predicting I will play in December or January, for that matter. One, you’ve got to have somebody who wants you, and two, it’s got to be right.

"But I have not completely ruled that out."

Rivers announced his retirement from the league in January, capping off a 17-season career which included a 16-year tenure at the helm of the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers offense. In his final season on the gridiron, he threw for 4,169 yards as he led the Indianapolis Colts to the Wild Card round.

With those same Colts in a preseason scramble since Carson Wentz had foot surgery on Monday, it's easy to imagine Rivers wrapping up his current gig coaching high school football in Alabama so he could make a late-season return.

Provided he's back in NFL shape, that is.

“I’m not quite there,” Rivers admitted. “I’m getting back there. I wouldn’t have made weight if I had to report last week, that’s for sure. But I am getting back into the lifting and running, and shoot, I occasionally throw a ball around out here in this heat. It’s not too hard to get a good lather going."
