The Los Angeles Rams made a strategic move ahead of the November 4 trade deadline, acquiring Tennessee Titans cornerback Roger McCreary. The addition comes as the Rams’ cornerback room faces depth concerns, particularly with Darious Williams recovering from a so-called ‘weird, freak’ shoulder and lat sprain.

Williams’ uncertain availability for Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints likely sped up LA’s decision to acquire McCreary, as the team had limited options at cornerback and needed to add depth quickly

McCreary’s career has seen a significant transition from outside corner to slot specialist. Early in his career, he played predominantly on the outside, but in 2025, he has lined up almost exclusively in the slot. While he has strengths in man coverage, his slot performance this season has struggled, allowing a career-high 90.5% completion rate.

Roger McCreary Coverage by Alignment (2022–2025)

Year Outside Snaps Outside Comp % Slot Snaps Slot Comp %
2022 604 66.7% 334 69.4%
2023 191 56.3% 534 77.0%
2024 10 100% 501 80.6%
2025 5 N/A 218 90.5%

This chart highlights his shift toward the slot over the years, coinciding with a noticeable decline in coverage effectiveness in that role.

Rams Depth and Flexibility

Even if McCreary primarily plays the slot, his presence relieves pressure on Emmanuel Forbes, Cobie Durant, Darious Williams, and eventually Ahkello Witherspoon, none of whom have secured consistent roles. Chris Shula can now rotate Quentin Lake into dime linebacker or deep safety packages, adding versatility to the backfield.

Additionally, McCreary is 25 and on an expiring contract, providing low-risk flexibility for the Rams. Les Snead’s approach mirrors recent acquisitions like Forbes—strengthening the roster without mortgaging the future.

Outlook

With the Rams aiming to sustain a 5-2 start and navigate a challenging three-game stretch, McCreary is expected to contribute immediately. While he may not revolutionize the secondary, he provides stability, depth, and positional versatility—qualities that make him a valuable piece in both the short and long term.
