Jayden Reed is the Packers’ No. 1 Receiver

Although the rumors about the interaction between Reed’s agent and Brian Gutekunst were false, the speculation itself highlighted the ongoing question of who will emerge as Green Bay’s top receiving option. Proven in his first two seasons, Jayden Reed, without a doubt, possesses the talent and ceiling to evolve into the leader of the receiving group this season.

What Reed Has Already Proven

Reed has solidified himself as a reliable option down the field for quarterback Jordan Love since he stepped into Green Bay. 

Ranking in the 78th percentile in yards per route run and the 64th percentile for yards per reception puts Reed well above average in those key efficiency categories. 

When being placed in the slot, Reed has been one of the more proficient receivers throughout the league. Reed ranks in the 72nd percentile for Y/RR and in the 89th percentile for Y/REC when lined up in the slot.

While facing zone coverage, Reed ranks in the 90th percentile for Y/RR and in the 68th percentile for Y/REC. 

Reed has also proven to be a red-zone favorite by ranking in the 82nd percentile for touchdowns per target. He also has 17 total touchdowns in his first two seasons, with three of them coming on the ground.

Reed’s Ability to Get Downfield

The one part of Reed’s game that does not get talked about enough is how he excels with downfield plays. 

Currently, he ranks in the 87th percentile in Y/RR and the 76th percentile for Y/REC, which puts him well above league average.

Reed spends most of his time in the slot; therefore, it is harder for him to get downfield play after play, as slot routes are commonly short of that margin. 

While Christian Watson excels in deep routes,  he is projected to miss the majority of the season. This could open the door for Reed to become an even more reliable downfield target.

Offseason Work

This past week, Reed participated in the “Wideout Workshop” in Miami, Florida. This camp gives elite NFL receivers the chance to share tips, techniques, and experiences. The star-studded list of receivers that participated was: Tyreek Hill, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Tank Dell, Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. 

Events like these have become increasingly common since the creation of Tight End University.

This allows for many positional groups throughout the NFL to gather and improve collectively in one space.

Reed’s 2025 Outlook

Jayden Reed enters this season with momentum and plenty of opportunity on his side. With Watson sidelined, a huge piece of the offense is up for grabs.

If Reed continues to emerge as the versatile playmaker and vertical threat that he is, he has every opportunity to become Green Bay’s No. 1 option. 

And based on what he has already shown, he just might be closer to that title than people assume.
