Jordan Poyer highlights Dolphins' potential free-agent signings

Free agency begins March 15 at 4 p.m. ET

Positional needs for Miami Dolphins: RT, Interior OL, S, CB, TE, RB

The Dolphins have -$22,876,176 in effective cap space for 2023, which could increase to as much as $89,105,536 under the maximum restructure allowed.

Much of the Dolphins' roster is set for the future after recent extensions.

In the event that they manage to clear space, here are some potential options for them in free agency.

Jordan Poyer, safety, Bills

The former seventh-round pick turns 32 in April but produced a very high level in Buffalo. Poyer is an intelligent and tough deep safety who has 24 career interceptions and was a first team All-Pro in 2021. He allowed a career-low 4.7 yards/target in coverage last season, per Pro Football Reference.

Poyer would be joining a team with a strong defensive front - consisting of Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Christian Wilkins.

Given their recent investments in this unit, don't be surprised if the Dolphins start trend towards heavy zone tendencies in the back seven - something Poyer would better fit instead of Miami's heavy usage of 'Cover 1' in recent years.

Poyer also recently liked a post linking him to the Dolphins, for what that's worth.

Hayden Hurst, tight end, Bengals

Hurst is a better blocker than current tight end Mike Gesicki, who may leave in free agency.

Gesicki had 32 catches for 362 yards and five touchdowns in 2022. He played in only 45% of snaps this season despite playing in every game. His targets dropped from 112 in 2021 to 52 in his first year in Mike McDaniel's offense.

Hurst had 52 catches for 414 yards and two touchdowns, despite missing four games with the Bengals last season.

Hurst is sure-handed, tallying 78 catches on 99 targets over his last two seasons for a 78.8 catch percentage. Miami has their two superstar wide receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and now it's about finding guys to fit around them.

N'keal Harry, WR, Bears

Yes, N'keal Harry!

The former first round pick who flamed out in New England and then was traded for pennies to the Bears is a free agent.

Harry caught seven of his nine targets for 116 yards and one touchdown this past season with the Bears. He has 714 receiving yards in four seasons.

At Arizona State, Harry demonstrated a few standout traits, including abilities to reel in contested catches and intriguing after-the-catch instincts.

Hardly talked about, he's one of the best blocking receivers to come out in recent draft classes.

Harry has his weaknesses. But there's an element of building a receiving group that is similar to constructing a basketball team. The Dolphins have their two scoring guards in Hill and Waddle, and they may just need someone like Harry to do the dirty work.

Harry's price should be very cheap, all things considered. Maybe McDaniel can get something out of him.
