Lamar Jackson speaks out following Breonna Taylor grand jury decision: 'We never get justice'

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has become the latest athlete to speak out following none of the officers involved in the death of Breonna Taylor being charged.

"It's crazy we never get justice for serious things. ... We're in America, where it should be freedom of speech, the land of the free. But I don't really feel like it's been that way for us Black people sometimes," Jackson told reporters.

Louisville police officer Brett Hankison was the only officer charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, which was due to bullets from Hankinson's weapon going through the wall of Taylor's apartment and into a neighbor's place of residence.

Taylor was shot and killed on March 13 after three police officers entered her apartment without warning due to a no-knock search warrant. Taylor's death, along with the death of George Floyd, sparked nationwide protests of police brutality and systemic racism.

Major athletes in every sport also voiced their displeasure, with the NBA experiencing a league-wide strike following the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisc.

Following the grand jury ruling, several athletes have used their platform to voice their displeasure with the decision, including Washington quarterback Dwyane Haskins, Chargers running back Justin Jackson, and Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas.

"It's really disappointing because justice should be served for her death, Breonna Taylor, and this movement in general, this Black Lives Matter, and understanding the neglect of not only Black people, but people of color in general," Haskins said. "The injustices, police brutality and systemic racism and everything of that nature, it's bigger than just sports or politics or the color of your skin."
