The Los Angeles Rams have signed their last rookie from the 2025 NFL Draft. The Rams drafted six players in this year’s draft. They traded out of the first round with the Atlanta Falcons. So their first pick didn’t come until the second round. With the second-round pick, they aimed to address an issue that had hindered the offense during the 2024 season. According to ESPN, the position they looked to fill had the fewest yards in the NFL at 459. So, in hopes of improving the yardage, who would the Rams look to?
The Los Angeles Rams’ contract with Tight End Tyler Higbee will end after the 2025 season. Higbee has been with the Rams since the team’s return to Los Angeles in 2016. Higbee was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Higbee missed most of the 2024 season recovering from an ACL tear from the year prior. Higbee caught 8 passes on 12 targets for 66 yards and 2 touchdowns. Higbee was a primary weapon during their 2021 Super Bowl run. The Rams sought to improve the tight end position in the hopes of enhancing their offense.
The Los Angeles Rams selected Oregon Ducks Tight End Terrance Ferguson with the 46th pick in the draft. Ferguson had spent four seasons with Oregon, during which he played 53 games, catching 134 passes for 1,537 yards with 16 touchdowns. During Ferguson’s last season with Oregon, he caught 43 receptions for a single-season record for a tight end and also gained 591 yards. That is second all-time at Oregon. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams and Ferguson agreed to a four-year rookie deal worth $9.7 million with $8 million guaranteed.
The Los Angeles Rams’ rookie tight end is the last to sign his rookie deal. The Rams signed a third-round pick outside linebacker from Michigan, Josaiah Stewart, for $6.3 million. Rams signed fourth-round pick from Auburn Running Back Jarquez Hunter for a 5.2 million deal.
The Los Angeles Rams had two picks in the fifth round. Ohio State Defensive Tackle Ty Hamilton signed a four-year deal worth $4.6 million. Also, the Rams drafted Chris Paul Jr from Ole Miss. Paul signed a deal worth 4.5 million. With the Rams’ last pick, they would sign wide receiver Konata Mumpfield from Pittsburgh. The deal will be worth $4.3 million.
Ferguson has his work cut out for him. He will be playing alongside Higbee, who, as of now, is the starting tight end for the Rams. The Rams organization and coaching staff like Ferguson’s ability to gain yards after catch, which was an issue for the tight end position during the 2024 season. Ferguson averaged 9.5 yards after the catch in 2024, which ranked him first among tight ends in college with at least 30+ plus receptions according to Pro Football Focus. Could Ferguson potentially break open the tight end position for the Los Angeles Rams offense?
Higbee isn’t the only tight end Ferguson has to compete against. The Rams also have Colby Parkinson, who is in his sixth season in the NFL. Parkinson was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2020. He would spend four seasons with the Seahawks before coming to the Rams in 2024.
The Rams have another tight end whom they drafted in 2023 in the fifth round, Davis Allen from Clemson. Allen caught six receptions on 13 targets for 39 yards last season for the Rams. Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay had this to say about Ferguson on June 18: “I’m excited about Terrance Ferguson, I like his demeanor, I like his ability to learn from (tight ends coach) Scott Huff, Tyler Higbee. He’s a guy we expect to contribute and to be able to do some good things, but that’s going to be earned.”
