Things could not be going much better for the Eagles. After leading the team to 38 points in Week 1, Philadelphia QB Jalen Hurts had the best game of his young NFL career in Monday night's win against the Minnesota Vikings.
The betting market is taking notice of the hot start by Hurts, now in his third NFL season. According to Caesars Sportsbook, Hurts' MVP odds have dropped from 14-1 to 8-1 following his 333-yard passing performance Monday. He now trails only Buffalo QB Josh Allen (3-1) and Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes (4.5-1).
No Eagles player has won the NFL MVP Award during the Super Bowl era. The only Philadelphia player to win NFL MVP in the team's 89-year history was former quarterback Norm Van Brocklin, who won the award in 1960.
Not only is Hurts impressing through the air, but his contributions as a runner have also helped propel the Eagles to their first 2-0 start since 2016. On Monday night, he rushed for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
For Hurts to separate himself in the MVP race, he probably must put up similar numbers to what Lamar Jackson did during his MVP season in 2019. Jackson finished with 3,127 passing yards, 36 passing touchdowns, seven rushing touchdowns and six interceptions while leading the Ravens to a 14-2 record.
The Eagles will need to maintain their status as a top team in the NFC for Hurts to remain in the MVP conversation. He will look to build his early season MVP case when the Eagles play at Washington in Week 3.
