NFL analyst: Titans had the worst offseason in league

When the Tennessee Titans brought in Ran Carthon to replace Jon Robinson as general manager, the expectation was the team’s roster would see a drastic overhaul for the better.

However, many of Carthon’s offseason moves left much to be desired, and according to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, the Titans had the worst offseason of any team in the NFL.

“I'm not sure whether the Titans are rebuilding,” Barnwell said. “The two moves hanging over the organization's head all offseason still haven't been resolved, as Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry are still on the roster. … At the league's most critical positions — quarterback, offensive tackle, wide receiver, edge rusher and cornerback — the Titans are deficient. … [Jeffery] Simmons is a superstar, but Tennessee desperately needs [Andre] Dillard, Harold Landry III and Treylon Burks to join him at that level in 2023.”

The Titans lost several key players from the 2022 roster including offensive linemen Nate Davis, Taylor Lewan and Ben Jones, linebackers Bud Dupree and Zach Cunningham, receiver Robert Woods and kicker Randy Bullock, and it could be argued that the players Carthon signed to replace them were mostly lateral moves.

Tennessee still has holes to fill at receiver, linebacker and cornerback.

Dillard was considered the crown jewel of Tennessee’s free-agent class — one that also included cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, edge rusher Arden Key, offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

And while first-round tackle Peter Skoronski and second-round quarterback Will Levis were fine adds through the draft, neither really helps the Titans become more competitive in 2023 than they were last season.

Perhaps 2023 is a rebuilding year for the Titans. Maybe Carthon has the leeway from controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk to see who on the roster is worth keeping around for a potential rebuild and who isn’t. Or maybe Carthon’s first moves as GM were just that underwhelming.
