The Los Angeles Chargers have a tough test coming up on “Monday Night Football” as they face the defending champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in a home game at SoFi Stadium. Both teams enter the contest with 8-4 records and are looking to cement their respective playoff spots. After Monday’s showdown, both the Chargers and the Eagles will have four games left in the regular season.
L.A. is looking to make it back-to-back wins following its 31-14 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 13. The Chargers cruised to victory in that one, but there was no shortage of action in the contest. In fact, two incidents from the game have been reviewed by the NFL and have resulted in punishments.
Justin Herbert, who had to undergo surgery after fracturing his left hand against the game, led the way for the Chargers in their win over Vegas. He finished with 15-of-20 completed passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Pro Bowl quarterback was involved in an altercation in the fourth quarter against Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby. Herbert hit the deck after being shoved by Crosby, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty against the Raiders for unsportsmanlike conduct.
That was not the incident that the NFL fined, though. Two sequences have been penalized by the league, with both incidents resulting in a punishment for a Raiders player. The first one is Devin White, who has been fined for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Las Vegas linebacker was flagged for taunting after stopping Chargers running back Kimani Vidal on a rush attempt. The Raiders got hit with a 15-yard penalty on the play, and White has now been fined $6,500 for his actions.
The second incident also transpired in the second quarter. Raiders cornerback Kyu Byu Kelly has been fined $5,722 for unsportsmanlike conduct after a violent gesture against the Chargers. This was after Kelly, who suffered a ruptured patella tendon in Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos, intercepted a pass from Herbert. The referees did not flag Kelly for a penalty during the game, but after reviewing the play, the league has decided to sanction the 24-year-old for his actions.
The Raiders fell to 2-10 after Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the Broncos, marking their fifth straight defeat.
