Some sobering news came our way around the NFL world Thursday evening. Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera, 58, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he was just diagnosed with cancer.
According to the Super Bowl head coach, he was diagnosed with lymph node cancer. In good spirits, Rivera noted that the cancer is in its early stages and “very treatable and curable.”
“I was stunned,” Rivera told Schefter. “But I was angry because I feel like I’m in the best health I’ve been in.”
Despite the diagnosis, the plan is for Rivera to forge ahead and coach the Washington Football Team after he was hired this past winter.
That’s complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that any treatment would put him in the high-risk category. According to the report, there’s a “Plan B” in place should things change on this front.
It goes without saying that the NFL community was out in full force Thursday evening wishing the highly-respected Rivera the best.
We love you, @RiverboatRonHC. We’re all with you, Stephanie, Christopher, and Courtney.
