The Cleveland Browns made the first trade of the 2025 NFL Draft and the sixth quarterback situation. In doing so, they began the night as the main character of the three-day festivities and finished Saturday at the center of the sport’s biggest story.
Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders spent the season as a top-two passer in his class and a presumed top-10 selection. Between doubts about his physical tools and a poor pre-draft process, the floor beneath his stock began to fracture. When the New York Giants traded up to No. 25 and took Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart, it shattered.
Sanders fell to Round 5, when the Browns ended a fall that included hours of Mel Kiper rants, a prank call, and Cleveland taking another quarterback, Dillon Gabriel, in Day 2. Teams didn’t view him as a first-round talent, but the storm of his father, his interviews, and his extracurriculars made him a first-round headache and a dangerous investment.
The fall shocked the football world and opened the door for everyone to chime in – including those looking to cash in on the NFL’s behalf.
Per MSNBC, a Colorado fan is hoping to take the league to court due to Sanders’ plummet to the Browns on Day 3.
The fan, according to Jordan Rubin, is “seeking a cool $100 million in punitive damages for what he called ‘the impact of the NFL’s actions on his emotional well-being.’”
If Sanders has a gripe with the league, it’s because the private phone he was provided for the draft’s festivities saw its number escape containment. Jax Ulbrich, the son of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, was behind the infamous prank call.
Even so, Sanders largely has himself and his circle to blame for his descent down draft boards.
“Specifically, Doe alleged violations of antitrust, civil rights, intentional infliction of emotional distress and trauma, and consumer protection laws,” Rubin reported. “On top of the nine-figure money damages, the suit seeks a ‘formal acknowledgment from the NFL regarding the emotional distress caused by their actions and statements,’ a ‘retraction of the slanderous statements made about Shedeur Sanders, along with an apology for any harm caused to his reputation’ and implementation of ‘fairer practices in the drafting process to ensure that talented players are recognized and given opportunities based on merit.’”
Needless to say, this should rank highly on the dumbest things to hit the internet this month. It will get dismissed quickly, and Cleveland fans can avert their attention to the intriguing quarterback competition that is about to begin.
