The New York Giants reportedly won't face another investigation into their handling of Jaxson Dart.
Dart stayed on the ground after hitting his head hard late in Sunday's loss to the Chicago Bears. The Giants put their rookie quarterback on the field for two more plays to end the quarter before removing Dart with a concussion.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News said Tuesday that the NFL and the NFL Players’ Association won't conduct a joint investigation into the situation.
Dr. Chris Nowinski, the CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and leading advocate of concussion research, questioned how no Giants staffers nor the league's concussion spotters pulled Dart for testing immediately after the play.
"If that’s true, then that would be a failure of the protocol," Nowinski said. "Because what triggers the protocol is head impact and lying motionless, which he was. There’s actually fumbling a football and making no attempt to recover it. So unless he has three broken ribs, that’s a concussion."
This isn't the first incident involving a potential head injury to Dart. In Week 6, Brian Daboll broke NFL rules by entering the blue medical tent as doctors evaluated Dart. The head coach, who was fired on Monday, appeared to yell at a team doctor in hopes of getting the first-round pick back on the field.
The league issued a $200,000 fine to the Giants and $100,000 to Daboll following an investigation with the players' union. They also docked rookie running back Cam Skattebo $15,000 for peaking into the tent during Dart's evaluation.
Sunday marked the fourth time Dart has been assessed for a possible head injury since the preseason. Leonard noted that the 22-year-old's head also hit the Soldier Field turf hard in the second quarter, but he stayed in the game without undergoing any evaluation.
"I don’t know the exact play that it happened for him relative to getting hurt or not getting hurt," Daboll said after the game. "I don’t know the play. I don’t know what it was."
Dart is currently in the league's concussion protocol, and his status is uncertain for Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers.
