Packers wide receiver Devin Funchess opts out of 2020 season

The Green Bay Packers will be without one of their wide receivers for the 2020 season.

Devin Funchess announced on Instagram that he has decided to opt out of the 2020 season, citing his firsthand experience with COVID-19 while caring for his family members who were infected with the virus.

The 26-year-old was the only addition the Packers made to their receiving corps. this offseason. Funchess, who spent last season with the Indianapolis Colts, signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Green Bay after missing the entire 2019 campaign with a broken collarbone.

Funchess was set to compete for the No. 2 or 3 receiving role behind Devante Adams, though that's not a possibility anymore.

After signing Funchess, the Packers passed up on the opportunity to draft a wide receiver in one of the deepest receiver drafts in recent years -- much to the displeasure of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers placed Funchess on the reserve/opt-out list and will be able to retain him on the same contract for the 2021 season.
