Patrick Mahomes, soccer guy?
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback can add that to his resume now that he has bought into the ownership group of MLS club Sporting Kansas City, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City's ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love," Mahomes said. "Sporting is a community-oriented club and I am excited to continue supporting the growth of soccer in Kansas City."
Sources told ESPN Mahomes and the MLS club had been in talks regarding a stake in the team for nearly a year. Mahomes has attended several Sporting KC matches and has interacted with fans.
"Patrick is a tremendous ambassador for Kansas City and we are delighted to welcome him to the Sporting Club ownership group," Sporting KC's principal owner, Cliff Illig, said. "In addition to achieving excellence on the field, he is deeply committed to giving back to the community and elevating the sport of soccer."
This isn't Mahomes' first sports franchise venture, as he bought into the Kansas City Royals ownership group last year. Adding soccer to the mix isn't a decision too far out of left field, either, since his fiancee is a minority owner of the Kansas City's National Women's Soccer League franchise.
