Patriots' Mac Jones taking ankle injury 'day to day,' doesn't say if he'll miss time

The New England Patriots fell to 1-2 on the season via Sunday's 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens and had literal injury added to that insult when starting quarterback Mac Jones suffered a reported high-ankle sprain that allegedly may require him to undergo surgery.

Jones somewhat surprisingly spoke with reporters at around 5 p.m. ET Monday afternoon and, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, seemed to visibly be in less pain than he was Sunday. The signal-caller channeled his inner Bill Belichick and offered little specifics about his status ahead of this coming Sunday's matchup at the 2-1 Green Bay Packers.

"I'm just kind of taking it day to day, and making sure everything's good," Jones explained, according to Michael Hurley of CBS Boston. "And honestly, any injury questions are Coach Belichick's thing. So I'm not here to answer them. I appreciate everyone kind of reaching out and looking after me, but it's kind of just a day-to-day thing, and I'm just trying to get better."

Hurley noted that Jones repeated the "day to day" phrase on multiple occasions during a 10-minute media session. The 24-year-old second-year pro wouldn't confirm or deny if he did or will seek a second opinion about his ankle, nor would he offer any indication about his availability for the Week 4 game at Lambeau Field.

Jones also dealt with back spasms earlier this month.

Per ESPN stats, Jones began Monday 31st among eligible quarterbacks with a 76.2 passer rating and 25th with a 35.9 total QBR for the season. Over the campaign's first three games, he completed 64-of-97 passes (66.0%) for 786 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions. He's also rushed for 37 yards and a score on 14 carries.

Journeyman backup Brian Hoyer is next up on the depth chart and presumably would start over rookie and fourth-round draft choice Bailey Zappe in Green Bay if Jones can't play.
