The Las Vegas Raiders are trying out several players at rookie minicamp, and one of the most intriguing ones was linebacker Jaylon Smith. He had played with the team in 2023, but only played one game before getting cut.
He wasn't able to land with a team in 2024. After a year off, the Raiders gave him a tryout, and it appears that he's impressed them.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Smith has signed a contract with Las Vegas. The team was looking for more veteran linebacker help, and now they have one who is familiar with defensive coordinator Patrick Graham's scheme.
In addition to his time with Graham in 2023, he also played under the coach when they were both with the New York Giants in 2021. Smith has bounced around the NFL in recent years, but he's best remembered for his stint with the Dallas Cowboys.
He developed into a Pro Bowl player and eventually earned a $68 million contract. However, injuries caught up to him, and he wasn't able to play up to that Pro Bowl level.
The Raiders lost Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo in free agency, so there are openings at linebacker. Smith will have to compete with another former Pro Bowler in Devin White.
Las Vegas appears to be favoring linebackers who have had success in the past, but need to get back on track. It's still an uphill battle for Smith to make the active roster once the season starts, but he's at least now in the building.
